Glamour from Grey Gardens

If you haven’t heard of it yet, you certainly soon will! Grey Gardens is the HBO film based on the lives of Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, the aunt and cousin respectively of Jackie O. As the creme of New York’s High society from the twenties through to the fifties when they disappeared from the scene and became completely recluse in their East Hampton mansion, Grey Gardens. The house deteriorated into a state of complete disrepair and Jackie Onassis and her sister Lee Radzwill stepped in to stop Little Edie and her mother being evicted. The 1975 documentary became an instant cult classic and the subsequent Broadway production was a roaring success. Now, the film, starring Drew Barrymore as Little Edie, Jessica Lange as Big Edie and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Jackie O. The Film has garnered huge interest in the US and is sure to cause as much of a storm here. The costume design in the film in nothing short of glorious; luxurious fabrics, delicate beading, muted colours, sumptuous design…it’s all there! The key to getting the Grey Garden’s look is to keep hair and make up simple and immaculate with Marcel waves and red lipstick an absolute must! Simple shapes but magnificent embellishment, plain outfits, but in real luxury fabrics and hats are the real winners for this look. Not forgetting the ubiquitous brooch, made legendary by Little Edie in her later life.

The Dresser’s Room has some fabulous pieces that are straight from the Grey Gardens’ glamourous era. The aubergine silk velvet gown, 1920s cocktail dresses, silk panne velvet evening jacket in mother of pearl, cream devore velvet 1920s evening jacket with cape sleeves, classic exotic skin kelly and clutch bags, a startling array of scarves and much much more!
